We still need more help at the Widgeon Creek invasive plant removal
July 5, 2024 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Friday morning next week).

I didn’t know much before about invasive Yellow Flag IrisĀ  – but it seems to be a threat to insects and that means it reduces feed for swallows and purple martins etc that we all love to see.

Cutting off and bagging the seed pods should not be hard. At my little neighbourhood lake, they also snipped off the roots below the water level, but it doesn’t sound like we’ll be asked to do that.

I’m told that the sap from cut stems is a skin irritant, so I expect we’ll be wearing gloves and protection for our forearms.

I’m going to bring my canoe rather than kayaks because there will be a need to hop in and out of our boats to come ashore with our clippers wherever we see a yellow flag. Metro Van Parks have other canoes we can likely use, too.

Please consider joining us and doing your bit for the environment!
